A glance at the Pauley Pavilion scoreboard after the final whistle Tuesday showed that UCLA won, 75-61, but Bruins fans leaving Pauley Pavilion must have been scratching their heads wondering: How in the Sam Houston was the final margin so big? For most of the game it wasn't. Sam Houston State, a mid-major team from Huntsville, Texas, caused mega-major problems for the nation's top-ranked team with a deliberate, slow-down offense and an airtight defense.

The Southeastern Conference is, for now, a helpless Bowl Championship Series bystander as it monitors three undefeated outliers competing for this season's title. Winners of six straight BCS crowns, the SEC needs any two among these three teams - Oregon, Kansas State and Notre Dame - to take a loss in order to get a team back in the BCS race. The conference could even advance two schools to the end game if all three undefeated teams lose once. The SEC title winner seems a sure bet, but what if No. 6 Florida also finishes 11-1 with a last win over Florida State?

Ben Howland preaches toughness to his UCLA players but is hypocritical. At the very least, next year's nonconference home basketball schedule should attract family members. Take nothing away from BYU, UC Riverside, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Oakland University, Sam Houston State and Michigan. Those schools would make a fine home schedule for UC San Diego. I can just see recruits salivating over the chance to squeak by Oakland U. Meanwhile, USC (USC?) plays Duke and Kansas in a brand-new arena over the next two years.

A two-run homer by catcher Tim DeCinces, son of former Angel third baseman Doug, broke an eighth-inning tie Thursday night and helped UCLA defeat Texas, 5-2, in an NCAA Central I Regional game before 6,649 at Disch-Falk Field. With two outs and the count full against Texas reliever Eric French (2-2), DeCinces drove the ball over the left-field wall. DeCinces' 17th homer traveled approximately 390 feet, giving UCLA a 4-2 lead.

Scottie Reynolds learned a lesson starting the game on the bench. Once in the game, he delivered a teachable moment of his own to 15th-seeded Robert Morris: Don't let a Final Four-tested team like Villanova off the hook. Reynolds was benched, his shot wasn't falling and his Wildcats were on the brink of having their NCAA tournament run end in a huge upset. He responded with a clutch performance at the foul line in the final minutes of regulation, and No. 2-seeded Villanova (25-7)

East Regional Kentucky (32-2) vs. East Tennessee State (20-14): Kentucky hasn't won an NCAA tournament game in three years, but that streak is about to end. East Tennessee is athletic and defense-minded but doesn't have the size to hang with these 'Cats. Marquette (22-11) vs. Washington (24-9): Washington wants a fast pace; the Huskies were held to fewer than 70 points eight times and lost five of those games. Marquette wouldn't mind a game in the high 60s. Texas (24-9)

Freshman forward Nikola Dragovic will be eligible to play Saturday against Michigan after serving a 10-game suspension mandated by the NCAA for his involvement on a club team that was deemed professional. But Coach Ben Howland said Thursday that doesn't mean he'll play. "That's yet to be determined," Howland said. "I'm sure he'll have an opportunity to play and it starts by earning that in practice so the next two practices will be important for him."
