Sam Nazarian, the 37-year-old power player behind SBE hospitality group, is transcending the no-longer-accurate moniker of "night life king" by expanding his popular Katsuya restaurant brand on an international scale. Late last month Nazarian signed a deal with M.H. Alshaya (a huge international retail franchise operator) to open 17 Katsuyas in the Middle East by 2017 with the first two, in Kuwait and Dubai, scheduled to open in 2013. This is in addition to Nazarian's investment in Adam Fleischman's buzzy Umami Burger, which Nazarian is helping to develop into a national chain.  Nazarian also has his sights set on Asia and is planning to open a branch of his SLS hotel chain in China.

Shulamit Gallery in Venice, which focuses on the Middle East and features Iranian and Israeli artists as well as L.A.-based Jewish artists, is debuting multimedia artist Jonas N.T. Becker in an exhibition called “Zol Zayn/What If?” The gallery hosted a private dinner Thursday night in the artist's honor. As guests wandered in from the rain, Becker, looking a bit nervous but dapper in a velvet tuxedo jacket, gave a short talk about her work. Then she led the 20 or so guests -- including Craft & Folk Museum director Suzanne Isken, KCRW "Art Talk" host Edward Goldman, collectors and artists -- on a tour of the modern, four-story home-turned-gallery.

Nazarian adds MyStudio, MyHouse, Eden and Crimson/Opera, all based in Hollywood, to a portfolio that includes popular venues such as the Colony, Industry and the Abbey.

IN the conference room of Sam Nazarian's West Hollywood offices sits a poster board map of Hollywood and environs. Dotted with the names of past, present and future hotspots such as the Meridien, Katsuya, Hyde, the Abbey, Shelter, Privilege and Prey, it looks like a Sunset Strip board game -- with the room's occupants commanding the bulk of the properties. "They're definitely the great Monopoly players right now," former Roosevelt Hotel nightlife matron Amanda Scheer Demme says.

Gladstone's Malibu, the iconic 33-year-old seafood restaurant that lays claim to 700 feet of prime beachfront real estate where the river of traffic on Sunset Boulevard flows into the estuary of the Pacific Coast Highway, had been having a bad decade, or two. If it was going to weather the twin storms of recession and the wrath of Yelp, it was going to need an extreme restaurant makeover. But the fact that it would be saved by Sam Nazarian — one of Hollywood's most glittering night-life players — made for a particularly interesting rebirth.
