Phil Jackson has been away from the NBA for a year already. Hard to believe -- maybe because he really hasn't gone away. Sure, he's no longer the coach of the Lakers or the Bulls ... or any other NBA team for that matter. He's not associated with any organization at this point, and seems to be keeping busy as a corporate spokesperson in various commercials. But it's Jackson's name that hasn't gone way. Pretty much every time there's an opening on a team, or even when there really is no opening but just some wishful thinking, Jackson's name pops up -- at least on blogs, talk radio, etc. The latest rumor, reported Thursday by the Orlando Sentinel, involved Jackson showing interest in but then backing out of joining the front office of the Orlando Magic.

So much for great starts. So much for dramatic home-court debuts. In three games, the Boston Celtics' four newcomers have done so little. The limited contributions of Bill Walton, Jerry Sichting, Sly Williams and Sam Vincent continued Wednesday night when the Celtics opened their home season with a 117-106 National Basketball Assn. victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. The quartet played a total of just 30 minutes and scored only six points while amassing nine personal fouls and five turnovers.

Veteran center Moses Malone will undergo surgery to remove a herniated disk and will be lost to the Milwaukee Bucks for an indefinite period. Malone, who has been put on the injured list, was bothered by the back problem from the beginning of training camp. The 37-year-old veteran, who is in his 17th NBA season, was trying to play through the pain without surgery. But he changed his mind after meeting with David Haskell, the team's orthopedic consultant.

Sam Vincent was fired by the Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday after one turmoil-filled season as coach. Part-owner Michael Jordan, who has the final say on all basketball decisions, dismissed Vincent less than a year after he gambled by giving him his first NBA head coaching job. Struggling to find a consistent rotation and clashing with players, the inexperienced Vincent led the Bobcats to a 32-50 record in a season the fourth-year franchise felt confident would end with its first playoff berth.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Larry Brown has reached an agreement to return to the NBA with his ninth team, as coach of the Charlotte Bobcats, a person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press on Monday. Brown was expected to sign a contract today. The Bobcats have called an afternoon news conference. It will be the 67-year-old Hall of Famer's first job since a messy exit from the New York Knicks in 2006. Brown will replace Sam Vincent, fired on Saturday after going 32-50 in his one season.

The Orlando Magic stopped its losing streak at 17--three games short of the NBA record in one season--as point guard Sam Vincent scored a career-high 35 points, including two free throws with 0.6 seconds left, in a 104-103 victory at Seattle on Wednesday night. It was the Magic's first victory since a Nov. 30 game against Miami. The Philadelphia 76ers lost 20 consecutive games in 1973 for the NBA record. The Magic trailed, 101-94, with 3:02 left.

The Lakers, who haven't been on the road since Nov. 14, will play tonight against the SuperSonics, who have split their last 18 regular-season games against the Lakers here. Seattle (5-4) lost the season opener to the Lakers, 113-109, at the Forum but is the only National Basketball Assn. team to have beaten the Lakers at least once in each of the last six seasons.
