In an effort to help meet the Inland Empire's demand for high-tech workers, the San Bernardino Community College District is planning to build a $2.8-million high-tech training center at the former Norton Air Force Base. When completed around the end of 2000, the training center will feature six computer-equipped classrooms and a multipurpose lecture hall.

South Orange County Community College District's trustees voted unanimously Wednesday to appoint Richard A. Jones as substitute-acting chancellor to fill in for the ailing Cedric Sampson. Jones has been acting vice chancellor for education services for the past few months, overseeing the district's revised master plan. He retired after serving as chancellor of the San Bernardino Community College District and president-superintendent of Clark College in Vancouver, Wash.

Citing a 20% drop in enrollment since 1981, the San Bernardino Community College District has issued layoff notices to 40 faculty members and 22 administrators. The district, which operates both San Bernardino Valley College in San Bernardino and Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa, said it needs to cut about $4 million out of its budget next year. Last year's operating budget was $31.1 million.

Jack Scott, former president of Cypress College in Orange County, has taken office as president and superintendent of Pasadena City College, replacing John Casey, who retired July 31. One of Scott's first duties was to name a successor to Bonnie James, the former head of finance for PCC, who is on a year's leave to take a similar position with the Los Angeles Unified School District. James was a top contender for the PCC presidency when Scott was named to the post in April.

I noted with great interest the Feb. 24 letter from Stuart M. Bundy, chancellor of the San Bernardino Community College District, about the "boys brigades" of World War II. Bundy is perhaps not aware there were a few of us, not many, who served in the war as 16-year-old merchant seamen. With an official legal waiver on my age, as a 16 year old I served as a merchant seaman aboard hazardous-duty oil tankers in both Atlantic and Pacific War convoys. I ended the war a few days past my seventeenth birthday in Okinawan waters, happy to be alive.

Judith Valles, who was president of Golden West College in Huntington Beach from 1988 until retiring June 30, will serve as interim head of Coastline Community College, it was announced Thursday. Coastline, which is based in Fountain Valley, is seeking a president to succeed William M. Vega. Vega was appointed chancellor of Coast Community College District on Oct. 4 and assumed his new duties this week.

Saddleback Community College District trustees have added two candidates to their search for a new chancellor after two previous prospects removed themselves from consideration. Donald L. Singer, president of San Bernardino Valley College, and Larry L. Stanley, president of College of the Mainland in Texas City, Tex., were interviewed last week.
