Gay men and women marched under brilliant blue skies in a gay pride parade Saturday, quietly grateful that the shadow cast by Andrew Cunanan is moving away from his hometown. An estimated 100,000 people turned out for the San Diego Lesbian and Gay Pride's 23rd annual festival. "It's as festive as any other year, if perhaps not a little more so," said media coordinator Frank Sabatini Jr. "It felt as if a cloud had been lifted."

Like a Cinderella finally invited to the big party, San Diego has begun what promises to be a two-week binge of sports boosterism and hometown chauvinism as Charger fans revel in their team's first appearance in the bowl called super. So ravenous were San Diegans on Monday to purchase anything connected to the team bound for Miami and Super Bowl XXIX against the San Francisco 49ers that a security guard was assigned to the team's official souvenir store at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

The 12th annual Street Scene takes place here tonight through Sunday with a lineup of more than 100 performers--far and away the most comprehensive the fest has offered yet. A diverse array, it is being served up on 12 stages covering 21 blocks in downtown's Gaslamp Quarter, and for the first time, a third day of shows has been added.
