Barbara Boester remembers a time at the Ventura County Fair, when all she had to worry about was minding her 8-month-old daughter while volunteering in the youth building. That was 30 years ago. Today, Boester has a few more concerns. This year, the 54-year-old Ventura resident, now the fair's deputy manager, was responsible for rounding up carnival rides and midway games.

The board of the Del Mar Fairgrounds has approved pat-down searches at reggae concerts after complaints about marijuana and tobacco use during a Ziggy Marley show earlier this year at the San Diego County Fair. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Wednesday that the fairgrounds' board of directors voted to approve the searches only at reggae concerts. It also approved a ban on smoking at the fair. The 22nd District Agricultural Assn., which governs the state-owned fairgrounds, also approved restricting reggae shows to adults 21 and older and requiring reggae artists to sign a contract prohibiting the promotion of drugs while at the fairgrounds.

Questionable point deductions cost Miss La Mesa the crown in San Diego County's "Fairest of the Fair" pageant, organizers said. Pageant officials and directors of the San Diego County Fair acknowledged Tuesday that Troy Lemperle, who represented La Mesa in the May 16 competition, was awarded the most points by judges but didn't win because she was penalized for missing part of a pageant rehearsal.

The aroma of deep-fried chicken and funnel cakes drifted across the Los Angeles County fairgrounds. The gleeful shouts of teenagers on carnival rides filled the air. But Kyle De La Cruz and his sister Jenny did not come to the fair for high-cholesterol treats or carnival thrills. They came to shop. The siblings arrived early on a recent weekend to find a deal on a barbecue island they would share at their adjoining homes in Glendale. And they got it. The salesman, selling spas, hot tubs and outdoor kitchens under a tall awning, cut $1,000 off the price of a $5,000 barbecue and even offered free shipping.

Minutes after the gates to the San Diego County Fair swung open last weekend, Rick Smith ran toward the carnival rides, trying to keep up with his two sons, 7 and 10. With one of the worst recessions in a generation, were the Smiths going to spend less? Would they perhaps skip a few carnival rides, stay clear of the stands selling deep-fried funnel cake and kettle corn or avoid basketball shooting games? No way. The Smith boys had just finished school and skimping was not an option.

Orange County Fair officials gambled this year that they could boost crowds with two changes: reopening the biggest stage on the fairgrounds and extending the fair's run by four days. Figures released after Sunday, closing day, suggest that they miscalculated on both counts: the reopened Pacific Amphitheatre lost more than $1 million and total fair attendance dropped from last year.

When singer Pat Benatar rolls through Southern California this summer, she won't be belting out her rock classic "Love Is a Battlefield" at the Orange County Fair. Although the fair hoped to book Benatar to perform for the fourth time in the last five years, the operators of Los Angeles' Greek Theatre snagged the '80s rock queen instead. For Southern California's county fairs, the music scene has also become a battlefield.
