Potential money problems generated by last week's stunning stock market crash have forced the sale of San Diego Securities, San Diego County's largest independent stock brokerage firm, to a Los Angeles-based brokerage, the company said Wednesday. San Diego Securities, which handles about 4,000 retail accounts, will become a subsidiary of Los Angeles-based Thomas Green & Associates after the deal is completed next week, according to Jose A. Arvizu, Green's chief financial officer.

Two more lawsuits have been filed in federal court against the former Blackwater Worldwide security firm by families of Iraqis allegedly killed by Blackwater guards. The lawsuits, filed this week, allege that Blackwater, which has changed its name to Xe, "fostered a culture of lawlessness among its employees." One suit was filed on behalf of the family of a teacher killed Sept. 9, 2007; the other was on behalf of 15 families of those killed Sept. 16, 2007. They are seeking unspecified damages.

Robert Berlin has been in business for 38 years. Since 1947 he and his company, Morse Signal Devices, have installed security systems in homes. In the aftermath of World War II, Berlin had no notion that the business he had chosen would emerge a gold mine. Sales now double every five years, and in 1985, Berlin said, business has never been better. Berlin isn't rejoicing that the FBI now cites 6 million burglaries in American homes each year, but his phone seldom stops ringing.

From opposite sides of a busy street, the protester and the police sergeant exchanged pleasantries last week. "Take care," called out anti-biotechnology activist Tom Ato as he waved to Sgt. Rebecca Bigbie. "Are you finished?" inquired Bigbie, who had been observing a bit of street theater that Ato and others were staging outside a Trader Joe's food market in Pacific Beach. "For now," said Ato, taking off his pig's mask and tomato-fish costume.

In a surprise move shortly before he was to stand trial, a San Diego teen-ager Wednesday pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder after a Superior Court judge ruled that a tape-recorded confession in which the young man admitted shooting two unarmed Mexican migrant workers could be used against him. Kenneth Alexander Kovzelove, who allegedly laughed and shouted, "Die!"

As city officials open their arms to the largest number of Soviet tourists ever to visit San Diego, FBI officials, in an unusual public appeal, are warning residents that their contacts with visiting Russians may be used by "skilled intelligence officers" for espionage. "Every San Diego citizen should be a good host to visitors but should also be alert.
