Two persons died Saturday in separate early morning residence fires in Vista and in the Paradise Hills area of San Diego. The body of 91-year-old Lee James Lamoreaux was found by firefighters after they extinguished a fire in the elderly man's cottage in the l900 block of Riviera Drive in rural Vista. The fire destroyed the kitchen, living room and one bedroom of the single-story home, causing about $30,000 in damage.

The Sheriff's Department has disarmed about 350 corrections deputies after learning that the weapons training courses they took were not certified. San Diego County Sheriff's Department officials believe that the deputies were properly trained but worry about a liability problem if officials are forced to prove, in a civil lawsuit, that the non-certified classes were adequate.

The remains of an unidentified man were found in a burning car early Monday morning in Bonsall, San Diego County coroner's deputies reported. The burning car was spotted on Camino del Rey shortly after 5 a.m. by a security guard from a nearby country club. Firefighters found the man's remains on the back seat. San Diego Sheriff's Department arson and homicide units and the coroner's office were investigating.

The body of a 49-year-old man was discovered Sunday morning in a remote patch of brush near Poway, and San Diego Sheriff's Department officials said they were searching for a 22-year-old man in connection with the killing. The victim's body was discovered about 8 a.m. Sunday, north of the Green Valley Truck Trail about half a mile east of Espola Road, deputies said. The man had been shot to death, deputies said, declining to release a name pending notification of relatives.

A San Diego sheriff's corrections deputy was arrested Thursday on suspicion of abusing his wife, authorities said. Ken Garcia, 31, was booked into the County Jail downtown, said Sgt. Glenn Revell, of the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Garcia, who has been with the department since 1987, works in the County Jail in El Cajon, Revell said. San Diego police arrested him, but no details of the arrest were available.

An El Cajon woman hanged herself using her bed sheets Friday night in an isolation cell at the Las Colinas County Jail in Santee, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Laura Beth Maki, 24, of the 500 block of Chambers Avenue, was found by deputies shortly before 10 p.m. Friday, a spokesman said. She was taken to Grossmont Hospital by the Santee Fire Department, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

A 41-year-old Escondido man has been arrested in the beating death of his 74-year-old mother, a San Diego Sheriff's Department spokesman said. Thomas Hayhurst, who lived at the home in the 14100 block of San Pasqual Road with his mother, was booked into County Jail in Vista on suspicion of murder, Sheriff's Sgt. Danny Goodrich said. The body of Violet Susan Hayhurst was found lying near the passenger door of her truck, a quarter-mile from her home early Sunday morning, Goodrich said.

Six Mexican citizens who spent two months in jail as suspects in the reported rape of a 15-year-old Poway girl plan to file claims totaling $6 million against San Diego County for wrongful arrest and imprisonment in connection with the racially charged case, an attorney said Friday.
