Austin Green's two-run single was the key hit that kept San Diego alive in the NCAA tournament on Saturday. The Torreros' 6-3 victory over San Diego State at Jackie Robinson Stadium advanced them to Sunday's game, where they will play the winner of Saturday's evening game between UCLA and Cal Poly. San Diego State (31-31) was leading, 2-0, when San Diego made the most of two hits in the fifth inning. Green's single gave the Torreros (33-23) a 3-2 lead. The Aztecs helped out in the inning, with two walks, a hit batter and an error.

Arizona and San Diego State did not meet in 2011 when both schools advanced to the NCAA tournament's West Regional finals at Honda Center. They met Thursday night -- like a fist meets a face. Maybe it was the underdog factor that produced so much ferocity in San Diego State's play, the upstart Mountain West Conference taking on a Pac-12 Conference powerhouse in a Pac-12 town. Whatever it was, shots flew, elbows flew and sparks flew Top-seeded Arizona had to scrap for every point and possession to escape with a 70-64 win before a crowd of 17,773.

Reporting from Tucson It took San Diego State 40 years to get this far in the NCAA tournament ? what was two extra overtimes on Saturday? OK, it was actually excruciating. Not "40 minutes of hell," the way Arkansas used to be called. This was 50 minutes of bone-tiring brain drain. San Diego State blew an 11-point first-half lead, squandered away the final minutes of regulation, crawled back from behind in the first overtime but finally outlasted Temple, 71-64, at the McKale Center.

Rochelin had been strictly a basketball player until playing for the Conquistadores as a senior. He was the defensive player of the year in the West Valley League. UCLA will play San Diego State in the Wooden Classic on Dec. 1 at Honda Center. The event, founded in 1994, lost some luster this past season, when it was a Pac-12 Conference matchup between the Bruins and Arizona. Playing the Aztecs returns the game to a nonconference game between solid programs. The Aztecs have reached the NCAA tournament the past three seasons. San Diego State, which has won 25 or more games the past four seasons, returns four starters from a team that finished 26-8 and lost to North Carolina State in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Had Connecticut guards Kemba Walker and Jeremy Lamb missed the bus, called in sick, or both fouled out with 38 minutes left, San Diego State might have won Thursday's West Regional semifinal game by 30. But that didn't happen. You talk about a two-man game. Walker and Lamb combined for 60 points to lead Connecticut to a 74-67 win over the Aztecs at the Honda Center to advance to Saturday's regional final game. Florida chases BYU, Jimmer Fredette out of tournament Walker scored 36 and Lamb added 24, which amounted to 81.1% of the Huskies' offense.

Reporting from San Diego ? The weather, save for the odd rainstorm, is consistently sunny and mild. The daily comings and goings of students, faculty and administrators remain largely unchanged. But D.J. Gay, a senior guard on the San Diego State basketball team, senses a shift on and off campus, especially in regard to the Aztecs athletics program. "There's definitely something different in the air," he said. That's what happens when the university's football team qualifies for a bowl game for the first time in more than a decade, and the men's basketball team is unbeaten and ranked seventh nationally.

Steve Fisher, San Diego State's basketball coach, peered down from the high heaven of an NCAA news conference platform last Saturday and remarked, "This is a funny business we're in. " Fisher's words came after Xavier Thames had scored 53 points in 48 hours to lead the Aztecs out of an NCAA sub-regional in Spokane. It wasn't funny if you were trying to stop the senior known as "X," who was definitely a factor in giving a point-guard tutorial against New Mexico State and North Dakota State.

SPOKANE, Wash. - San Diego State had, by far, the scariest time slot in Spokane. The Aztecs played the last Thursday night game on what had to seem like the longest day of the year. Boy was it ever. Spokane Arena, by the time the Aztecs tipped off, had been the scene of high-major carnage. The upset ghosts were already wafting in the woodwork and catacombs. Two No. 12-seeded schools, Harvard from the East region and North Dakota State from the West, had already sent home a pair of fives - Cincinnati and Oklahoma.

San Diego State University is the latest Cal State campus to impose a mandatory "student success fee," a controversial new charge that critics have blasted as a sidestep around the system's commitment to freeze tuition. Students in the fall will pay $50, with the fee increasing over the next four years to $200 per semester. This is in addition to the current annual tuition of $5,472 and other campus-based enrollment fees that average more than $1,200. The San Diego campus was among several -- Fullerton, Dominguez Hills and Fresno -- that were considering the success fees to help pay for basic educational services such as faculty hiring, increased class offerings, counseling and other needs.
