A rosary will be said tonight for Los Angeles Police Det. Jeffrey Thomas Esparza, who died Saturday at his Sylmar home of an undisclosed illness. He was 35. Born and raised in San Fernando, Esparza joined the LAPD 11 years ago. At the time of his death, he was supervising an anti-drug, anti-gang team of detectives out of Newton Division, according to Officer Holly Capra with the LAPD's Employee Assistance Unit. He was also active in the U.S. Naval Reserves.

Shortly before his death, Bob Hope was asked by his wife, Dolores, where he wanted to be buried. The master of the one-liner said, "Surprise me." The enduring comedian, who died July 27 of complications from pneumonia at the age of 100, could have been laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, along with Hollywood luminaries Clark Gable, James Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Nat King Cole, Jean Harlow and Walt Disney.

Felipa Perlita Santoyo, a lifelong resident of Burbank, has died in Burbank. She was 60. Mrs. Santoyo died Sept. 19 of complications from a brain tumor, said her son George Santoyo. Born Felipa Perlita Sanchez on Aug. 27, 1930 in Burbank, she married Libo Santoyo in the late 1950s. Mrs. Santoyo was active in the mid-1970s with a Spanish acting ensemble called Nostrotos and was a longtime member of St. Finbar Catholic Church in Burbank.

Rita N. Rivera, an elder of the Tataviam tribe whose ancestors helped build the San Fernando Mission, has died at her Northridge home. She was 86. Rivera, surrounded by generations of family members, died Sunday of complications of her advanced age. She often spoke of her heritage, recounting stories of tribal members dating back to the 1850s.

Helen Patricia Thomas, who served as director of student health services at CalArts for the past 10 years, has died at a Northridge hospital. She was 67. Mrs. Thomas died Friday of ovarian cancer, said her husband, James L. Thomas. Father Jacek Przygoda, who taught at Loyola Marymount University and Our Lady Queen of Angels High School Seminary, has died at a Northridge hospital. He was 80. Przygoda died Friday of heart failure, said a family friend, Jerry Kasper. Born in Brzescie, Poland, Przygoda was ordained in 1933 at Sandomierz Cathedral in Poland and taught in Polish schools before serving as a senior chaplain in the Polish underground during World War II.

When Cardinal Roger M. Mahony startled Los Angeles civic leaders by saying he might put the new St. Vibiana's Cathedral in the San Fernando Valley, or elsewhere outside of downtown, it's little wonder that speculation quickly focused on an area where many Catholic institutions have clustered--from a high school to a hospital, a historic mission to a cemetery.

A funeral mass and rosary for comedian Jerry Colonna will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. Mel's Catholic Church, 20870 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills. Bob Hope, who often worked with Colonna, will deliver the eulogy. Graveside services will be held Monday morning at San Fernando Mission Cemetery, 11160 Stranwood Ave., Mission Hills. Colonna died Friday of kidney failure at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills. He was 76.
