Mark Collingsworth, a freshman from San Marcos High School, kicked a 35-yard field goal as time ran out to give Occidental College a 13-13 tie with the University of San Diego in the Division III teams' college football opener Saturday at Los Angeles. Collingsworth's kick capped a 12-play, 56-yard drive after USD had taken a 13-10 lead on Brendan Murphy's 20-yard touchdown pass to Todd Jackson with just more than two minutes remaining.

A teen-age Japanese girl on a cultural exchange visit was killed Friday, and another Japanese girl was badly hurt when a car driven by their host family's daughter crashed into a school bus. The young driver also was hurt when her car slammed underneath the back of the stopped school bus, officials said. In addition, 21 of the 52 junior high students on the bus received minor injuries.

Ron Newman, Coach of the San Diego Sockers, will be the grand marshal of the Boulevard of Champions Parade today on El Cajon Blvd. The parade, which will feature the Major Indoor Soccer League champion Sockers, will run from 33rd to 39th Street. This is the first year of the parade, which organizers hope will annually honor champions in San Diego. Other special guests will also include members of the San Diego Padres and Chargers, the U.S.

Ken Broach, San Marcos High School football coach, knows just what to expect from the El Capitan offense tonight. "They are a team just like us," Broach said. "They like to hold on to the ball and keep the defense off the field. . . . I think the difference will be turnovers." San Marcos (5-4-2) meets El Capitan (6-4) in the second round of the San Diego Section 2-A playoffs tonight at 7:30 at El Capitan.

As crowds jammed the city's main downtown thoroughfare for its annual Old Spanish Days Fiesta, police officers fatally shot an Oxnard man who allegedly pulled a loaded gun during a fight, police said Saturday. The shooting occurred outside a restaurant at 11:50 p.m. Friday as hundreds of Fiesta revelers packed lower State Street.

Two San Marcos High School students may be expelled for drawing a picture of a lynching and leaving it on the desk of the only black girl in their English class. The girls were suspended last week, more than a month after the incident. An 85-yard scoring drive to open the second half, capped by a 34-yard field goal, was exactly what the San Marcos High School offense needed as the Knights beat El Capitan, 24-9, in the second round of the San Diego Section 2-A playoffs at El Capitan Saturday night. "That big drive put the momentum back in our pocket," San Marcos Coach Ken Broach said. "That was the swing point of the ballgame for us." San Marcos (6-4-2) will play La Jolla next week in the semifinal.

Documentary filmmaker Michael Craven spent the last months of his life videotaping his teenage son's track meets in anticipation of a family reunion at the boy's graduation, his friends and relatives said. But instead of sharing happy moments and celebration, loved ones of the 44-year-old Canoga Park man will gather to mourn and remember a man whose life was cut short. "He had so much to contribute and now won't," said his friend Scott Ross. "It's beyond horrible."
