Police found charred skeletal remains Sunday in a backcountry area of north San Diego that was scorched by a brush fire about six weeks ago. The remains were discovered about noon along California 78 east of the San Pasqual Academy, police said. A coroner's spokesman said the department did not dispatch an investigator to the scene since police were unable to determine whether the remains were of a human or an animal.

In a bedroom papered with pencil sketches, honor roll certificates and verses by rapper Tupac Shakur, Mishelle Holbrook nonchalantly ticked off the 12 previous foster families and group homes she had been assigned to since she entered San Diego County's foster care system. "They say I have an attitude, but I'm just determined and feisty," said Holbrook, 17, who authorities said was removed from her alcoholic father eight years ago.

With Easter just around the corner, egg ranches in North County are gearing up for their busiest week of the year. One popular destination for egg buyers is the San Pasqual Academy Egg Ranch, 3 miles east of the Wild Animal Park in the San Pasqual Valley. The ranch, opened in the early 1950s, is part of a Seventh-day Adventists boarding high school. Here, dozens of cages set against an imposing background of boulder-strewn hills are home to more than 40,000 chickens.

Imagine 290 teen-agers attending a boarding school that doesn't allow radios, tape players or television, or going to movies, or the reading of Western, sci-fi or romantic novels. Imagine them getting up at 5 or 5:30 in the morning, eating breakfast at 6:15 and being at their first class--or shoveling chicken manure or washing down the cows' milking stalls--by 7 a.m.
