Jordan and Sandra Laby bought their first weekend home in Ventura 28 years ago, when a night out at the theater usually meant an hourlong drive. "When we moved to Ventura, one of the things we didn't have was theater or music," said Jordan Laby, an inventor of products ranging from swimming-pool cleaners to anesthesia equipment. "If you wanted to have cultural entertainment, you had to drive somewhere else."

The Cal Lutheran University Alumni Assn. honored Christina Iverson Myren, a member of the class of 1968, with a Career Achievement Award. Myren received her master's degree in elementary education from Cal State Northridge in 1971. She has been a part-time instructor at Cal Lutheran, Pepperdine University and CSUN as well as a part-time mentor-teacher with the Conejo Valley Unified School District.

Santa Paula High School junior Liberado Jimenez was chosen to attend the annual League of United Latin American Citizens Youth Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., which was held earlier this month. About 100 high school students from throughout the United States and Puerto Rico attended the event. During the conference, students received leadership training, discussed national policy issues that affect youth and visited the White House.
