Sandy Needham, the No. 1 singles player on the Santa Margarita girls' tennis team, didn't attend summer school. But she still learned some valuable lessons. "I played in a lot of junior tournaments over the summer," Needham said. "I learned that if you want to win, you have to work hard on all the points. You can't relax." Nobody who faces Needham this season can afford to do that.

Lynne Thiel and Michelle Turner swept at No. 1 doubles to pace Edison to a 13-5 girls' tennis victory over Marina Thursday to take sole possession of first place in the Sunset League. Thiel and Turner won 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 for the Chargers (9-1, 5-0). Holly Meyers swept at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, for Marina (4-1 in league). In other Villa Park tournament games: El Toro 6, Capistrano Valley 4 (OT)--Daniel Mathot scored five goals--two in the fourth quarter and one in overtime--for El Toro, which rallied from a 4-2 fourth-quarter deficit to win the semifinal game. Capistrano Valley led, 4-2, with 3:40 left, but Mathot scored two goals, each while El Toro had a man-up advantage. Mathot scored another man-up goal in overtime to give the Chargers the lead for good.

The Mater Dei High School girls' tennis team swept at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in defeating Woodbridge, 11-7, in a nonleague match Monday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Club. Erika Asmuss, a senior, swept in singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, and Trisha Abe and Cheri Ota won in doubles, 7-6, 6-3, 6-1, for Mater Dei (1-0). Asmuss was 60-0 last season.

Enjoying an overwhelming advantage in singles, Santa Margarita made easy work of Mater Dei, 12-6, in a nonleague girls' tennis match Monday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Club. Santa Margarita (9-2) won eight of the nine singles sets to nullify a 5-4 edge by Mater Dei (5-3) in doubles. The Eagles, who split their two matches with Mater Dei last season when both teams were in the now-defunct Angelus League, got another exceptional performance from their No. 1 singles, Sandy Needham.
