The City Council recently approved accepting $291,000 in emergency shelter funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. At a meeting tonight the City Council will consider allocating $11,831 for membership in the National League of Cities, a program that helps train city council members on legislative and policy matters around the nation. The council also will consider allocating $361,970 of Federal Empowerment Zone funds to several city recreation programs.

The city will invest more than $34 million to rehabilitate streets over the next two years. The city owns and maintains more than 410 pavement miles, valued at $400 million, and has spent $10 million over the last two years to repave 10 miles of streets. As part of the plan, and on the recommendation of the Public Works Agency, the City council has established new excavation requirements and imposed trench cut fees on utilities making and benefiting from excavations in public streets.
