In a brazen and unusual attack, a San Diego County woman was raped on the side of Interstate 5 last weekend by a man who asked if she needed help after her car broke down, authorities said. "I've never heard of this happening on a freeway," said Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department. "It shows that he's a very brazen individual, which makes him extremely dangerous." The 24-year-old woman was driving south toward her San Diego County home about 2:30 a.m.

Motorists driving the Santa Ana Freeway will encounter nightly construction delays beginning Sunday. Ten miles of asphalt is scheduled to be replaced with rubberized pavement from the El Toro Y in Irvine north to Fourth Street in Santa Ana, Caltrans officials said. In addition, they said, the repaving of Jeffrey Road and the I-5 interchange onramp will occur nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The $14-million pavement project is expected to be completed in October.

Rosalind Gonzales has lived in her Norwalk house 30 years, raising her two now-adult sons there. She told state officials Tuesday that she's not ready to move -- even though her home might have to be demolished to make room for an expanded Santa Ana Freeway.
