A man jumped to his death Tuesday morning from an overpass of the Santa Ana Freeway, California Highway Patrol officials said. The incident occurred about 6:30 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway at Jeffrey Road. Traffic was backed up to the El Toro Y, CHP Officer Katrina Lundgren said. The man's name was withheld pending notification of relatives. The carpool and four lanes of the freeway were closed for about 3 1/2 hours as authorities investigated, Lundgren said.

Because of freeway improvements, the southbound Santa Ana Freeway connectors to the eastbound and westbound Garden Grove Freeway are scheduled to close Thursday for about five months. In addition, the southbound Santa Ana Freeway offramp to Bristol Street-La Veta Avenue will close until June. Both closures will allow workers to widen the freeway as part of the I-5 North Improvement Project, a $1.1-billion plan that includes adding carpool lanes and upgrading ramps.

Emergency repairs snarled the southbound Santa Ana Freeway between Sand Canyon Road and Irvine Boulevard on Friday after the far right lane sank several inches, Caltrans officials said. Engineer Mike Grotke said workers on Thursday night removed temporary steel shoring beams that have been in place for more than a year for the freeway widening project, causing the lane to settle 6 inches. State Department of Transportation crews closed two lanes from 7:45 to 10 a.m.

A convicted robber, sentenced to a jail near Irvine, walked away from a work crew assigned to farming chores just outside a guarded security area, climbed a five-foot-high fence and escaped Saturday morning. But his freedom from the James A. Musick Branch Jail was short-lived. About seven squad cars from the Orange County Sheriff's Department, as well as cars from the California Highway Patrol and Irvine police swarmed the area as an Anaheim police helicopter hovered overhead.
