Perhaps the two best teams in Orange County square off tonight when Mater Dei hosts Mission Viejo in a highly-anticipated Pac-5 Division quarterfinal game at Santa Ana Stadium.  It's no surprise that two of the top programs in Southern California are piloted by two of the top coaches in Mater Dei's Bruce Rollinson and Mission Viejo's Bob Johnson. Mater Dei (9-2) finished runner-up in the Trinity League to St. John Bosco and is led by quarterback Chase Forrest, who has thrown for 1,619 yards and nine touchdowns, and running back Justin Allen, who averages almost seven yards per carry and has 10 touchdowns.

Genaro Leon worked less than a round Saturday night and Mauricio Aceves had to work 12 rounds, but both came away with the same thing--World Boxing Organization titles. Leon of Mexico won the vacant WBO welterweight title with a knockout in the first round. Aceves won the vacant WBO lightweight title with a unanimous decision in front of about 3,000 at Santa Ana Stadium. Leon (27-2) danced with Danny Garcia of Puerto Rico for about the first minute and a half, until he landed a sharp left jab to the chin.

So what if there is no Southern Section playoff berth or Angelus League championship on the line? The mere mention of Servite playing rival Mater Dei--anywhere, anytime, in any sport--is enough to pique the interest of players, coaches and fans of both schools. Tonight, the sport is football, and the Friars and the Monarchs will clash at Santa Ana Stadium at 7:30. Servite (3-1 in league, 8-1 overall) and Mater Dei (3-1, 6-3) already have clinched berths in the Big Five Conference playoffs.

Seventy-five-year-old Hortense Flores thought her family was taking her out Saturday for the traditional Mother's Day dinner at her favorite Santa Ana restaurant. That would have been nice enough, she said. Instead, they drove her to a big mariachi-fest, which was strange to her because her Americanized children usually turned the radio off or changed the station when she played traditional Mexican music. "I was shocked. They're taking me to the mariachis?" said Flores from her bleacher seat at Santa Ana Stadium.

Let the carnage begin. The six-team Trinity League starts play Thursday night, and you know what that means. "It's going to be the last man standing," Santa Ana Mater Dei Coach Bruce Rollinson said. "You need a few backup guys because there's no way you're going to come out unscathed. You need to bring a lot of Band-Aids and liniment. " Four of the six Trinity League teams — Anaheim Servite, Santa Margarita, Bellflower St. John Bosco and Orange Lutheran — took this week off and were trying to heal injuries and prepare for what is always a brutally tough, five-week-long mental and physical football survival test in trying to make the Pac-5 Division playoffs.

St. Bonaventure's defense, led by linebacker Jason Farlow, will try not to get worn down or give up the big play.

Charisma. Intelligence. Athleticism. Toughness. Those are just a few of the qualities exhibited by junior quarterback Travis Waller of Anaheim Servite. If a coach needs a teenager to lead on and off the field, Waller is the ideal candidate. With a 3.8 grade-point average, off-the-chart physical skills and personal experiences that keep him inspired and focused, the 6-foot-3 Waller shows every sign of understanding what it takes to succeed. Moved from receiver to quarterback in the fifth game of last season, Waller has found his calling.
