The Santa Ana Unified School District board is scheduled Tuesday to choose names for three elementary schools planned for construction later this year. Residents of the district were asked to submit their choice of names for the new schools.

The Santa Ana Unified School District will use a $6-million interest-free federal loan to renovate five high schools and strengthen academic programs designed to increase graduation rates. The loan will come from the 2002 Qualified Zone Academy Bond Program. To qualify, the district had to raise $600,000 from the private sector.

Billy Cat Tran began his college career this year with the help of Cal State Fullerton's first mathematics scholarship offered to high school graduates of the Santa Ana Unified School District. The $300-per-year scholarship was created by math professor David L. Pagni, who started an endowment by donating the $4,000 cash award he received when named the university's 1993-94 Cal State Outstanding Professor.

The Santa Ana Unified School District has been awarded grants totaling $343,305 for educational programs for infants and young children. District spokeswoman Diane Thomas said a recently awarded $175,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education will pay for a program for pupils with limited English at Henninger, Lowell and Martin elementary schools.
