It's not unusual for a high school team to be honored by the local city council or school board for winning a championship, and that's what happened last week for the Santa Ana Valley girls' water polo team. They showed up at the board of education meeting to be recognized for winning a second consecutive Southern Section Division 7 championship last month. What surprised many in the audience was the revelation they heard after a question was asked by a board member: "What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome?"

Ike Harmon and Olujimi Mann each scored 27 points to lead Santa Ana Valley past Estancia, 90-66, in a quarterfinal game of the Irvine World News boys' basketball tournament Wednesday at Irvine High. Harmon made 14 of 17 field-goal attempts and had 10 rebounds for Santa Ana Valley (4-3), which outscored previously unbeaten Estancia, 52-34, in the second half. Mann, who also had eight assists, helped Santa Ana Valley take control in the second half when it outscored Estancia, 52-34.

Santa Ana Valley soccer player Francisco Islas, whose age was questioned by Orange High, was declared eligible Friday by Santa Ana Valley Principal Robert Nelson. Islas, a Times All-County player last year, received a birth certificate Friday that indicated he was born in 1976, making him 17 years old. Administrators at Orange High had claimed Islas was born in 1974. Karen Hellyer, a Southern Section administrator, said: "(Santa Ana Valley) apparently has verified that the kid is 17 years old.

One game after Coach Rich Prospero resigned for personal reasons, third-ranked Santa Ana Valley was upset by unranked Canyon, 52-39, in a Century League boys' basketball game Wednesday at Canyon High. Canyon (7-11, 1-1) led by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter before Michael Riggins cut it to 48-42 with two three-pointers with less than two minutes left. Tough defense by Adam Hoover and the Comanches held Olujimi Mann to six points before he fouled out.

Seven players -- four from Santa Ana Century and three from Santa Ana Valley -- will sit out between one and three games in the wake of an altercation involving athletes and spectators at an Orange League boys' soccer match Wednesday at Centennial Park in Santa Ana. The suspensions were imposed by school officials as a result of a two-hour meeting Thursday, when videotape of the game was reviewed.
