The new Nordstrom at Santa Anita Fashion Park in Arcadia opens Friday amid hopes that the new mall wing will attract higher-income shoppers and make good the city's $3-million investment in the mall renovation. "Getting Nordstrom was a real coup," City Manager Bill Kelly said. "We'll hopefully . . . return the city's investment many times over." In 1992, the city donated $3 million of the expansion's $34-million cost to procure parking for the new wing from Santa Anita Park racetrack.

Auto parts manufacturer Frank Stronach, still heady from winning last Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic with Awesome Again, was a visitor at Santa Anita on Friday, taking another presale look at the track he says will be his Dec. 15. "I've had my eye on Santa Anita for some time," Stronach said. "If there's any racetrack in the world you want to have, it would be Santa Anita." Stronach, 66, said he sees no obstacles to his purchase of Santa Anita from Meditrust Cos.

Men wielding sledgehammers and crowbars smashed their way into three jewelry stores at an Arcadia shopping mall and escaped with at least $150,000 worth of gems and other valuables, police reported. Investigators said some maintenance workers and a delivery man saw the burglars drive away moments after the pre-dawn break-ins at J. Herbert Hall, Slavick's and Schaffer & Sons jewelers at Santa Anita Fashion Park.

When Hinshaw's opened its doors Friday, the Arcadia retailer promoted its bargains with placards that have become signs of the times for more and more privately owned department stores--"Going Out of Business Sale." Large crowds milled in the aisles hunting for bargains. Long lines stretched from the cash registers. And the store's renowned service was slowed by the crush of shoppers, said Alvira Yates, a Hinshaw's devotee who will miss the local landmark.

Hours for card-signing are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. The mall is at 400 S. Baldwin Ave.
