It's summertime, and productions of "The Secret Garden" are sprouting like crabgrass up and down the coast. The latest offshoot is at Santa Barbara City College's Garvin Theatre, offering up a lavish, eye-catching bouquet, in keeping with the intent of the show's creators. Yet for all its decorative appeal, this 1991 musical adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's perennial children's favorite remains a problematic stage transplant.

Fewer than 10% of the more than 400 citations and arrests made during a massive party-turned-riot in Isla Vista over the weekend were tied to students at nearby UC Santa Barbara, authorities said, reinforcing arguments from locals that outsiders were mostly responsible for the mayhem. According to preliminary data released Wednesday by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department, 130 people were arrested Saturday night during "Deltopia," an annual, unsanctioned row of parties in Isla Vista next to the university.

UC Santa Barbara police have released sketches of two men believed to have participated in the beating and gang rape of a female student early Sunday. Investigators believe there were at least three men involved in the attack, but so far have only been able to get two sketches based on information they received from the 19-year-old victim, said UC Santa Barbara Police Sgt. Robert Romero. The student told police she was approached by a group of men in Isla Vista between 12:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. Sunday.

Just hours before a UC Santa Barbara woman was gang raped near campus, a city college student reported being sexually assaulted in the area, an official said Tuesday. The first incident occurred Saturday night and was reported by a Santa Barbara City College student who said she was attacked by an unidentified man, said Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kelly Hoover. Authorities said it was unclear if the rape was connected to an incident hours later, when a 19-year-old UC Santa Barbara student was gang raped by three men as she walked toward apartments in Isla Vista.

The Marmonte League East Division begins on Thursday night with a showdown game between Ventura St. Bonaventure and Westlake Village Westlake at Santa Barbara City College. St. Bonaventure (3-2) has looked good at times and looked not so good. Injuries have hampered the Seraphs' development, but there's no more time for experimenting. Quarterback Ricky Town, who has missed the last three games with a hyper extended knee, could be back in the lineup. St. Bonaventure's big challenge is improving its defense that has been torched for lots of touchdowns when facing quality opponents such as Corona Centennial and Alemany.

Yes, Ventura St. Bonaventure lost to Alemany, 38-24, on Friday night, but a couple of young players were pretty stunning. Sophomore quarterback Darius Vines, filling in for the injured Ricky Town, passsed for 295 yards. Junior receiver Lavan Alston, trying to help replace the injured Bryce Dixon, had touchdown receptions of 60 and 21 yards and 235 yards receiving. Both have bright futures. Alemany is 5-0 and has its own rising star in senior quarterback Alif Grayes, who completed 15 of 17 passes for 270 yards and also ran for 111 yards in 10 carries.

The county grand jury has recommended that a sobering center be placed near UC Santa Barbara for drunk young adults as an alternative to sending them to County Jail. The 18-member panel said a sobering center in the Isla Vista neighborhood would save money because sheriff's deputies wouldn't have to take offenders to jail. The grand jury also wants drunk students to pay by cleaning Isla Vista streets of what the panel calls student-generated litter.
