In a county that boasts internationally known beaches like Venice, Santa Monica, Malibu and Zuma, lifeguards at the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Park know their workplace might seem like the Siberia of the sands. "The beach guards snub the lake guards," lifeguard Jim Hughes said as he and fellow guard Dave Dobbels on a recent workday cruised the gray-sand, crescent-shaped beach in the central San Gabriel Valley. "Beach Blanket Bingo" it's not.

Officials said Wednesday that they are winning the battle against mosquitoes infected with the St. Louis encephalitis virus at the Santa Fe Dam Park in Irwindale. About 500 mosquitoes were trapped Monday night, compared with 25,000 caught last week, said Terry Dipple, San Gabriel Valley Mosquito Abatement District chairman.

When I glanced at the front-page color photo (July 16), I couldn't help but say "Why, that's old Cornelius, the Pierre Hotel's doorman in full regalia!" What a disappointment it was to discover it wasn't Cornelius, but some British field marshal greeting Bush and his entourage. I still can't believe a real soldier dresses that way. The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services has posted the Santa Fe Recreational Dam area in Irwindale with "mosquito warning" signs advising the public on precautionary measures to avoid exposure to mosquitoes. Evidence of St. Louis encephalitis virus has been detected in chickens tested during a routine surveillance. Mosquitoes can transmit the SLE virus to humans. The virus can cause inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.
