At venerable Comiskey Park, the talk has returned--dare we say--to 1919 and the Chicago Black Sox. Since the release this year of "Eight Men Out," a film chronicling White Sox players who were charged with conspiring with gamblers to lose the 1919 World Series, Chicago's misfortunes have been recounted. And dredging up those kinds of memories does little for the already dented White Sox psyche.

When does a conference championship mean more than an NCAA title? Maybe never, but it's a darn close second when you play water polo in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Nine of the top 10 teams in the country will be competing for the MPSF title Saturday and Sunday at Long Beach's Belmont Plaza. When the NCAA tournament begins Nov. 26 in the same pool, as many as four of them will be left high and dry because of automatic berths awarded to other conference champions.

For fun this summer, Mario Zubia spent six hours a day, five days a week in a Caltech classroom studying neuroscience and physics. He topped it off with five hours of homework a night. And the 17-year-old Santa Maria resident did it by choice. "Some of my friends are like, 'What's wrong with you?' " said Mario, chuckling. "A high school counselor told me about it. I always liked science and math, and it seemed like a great opportunity." Teens such as Mario -- who eschew such summer rituals as hitting the beach in favor of hitting the books -- appear to be growing in number, according to high school and college administrators.
