Group Agrees to Buy Santa Monica Beach Hotel: A group headed by hoteliers Edward and Thomas Slatkin and an affiliate of investment banker Goldman Sachs & Co. agreed to purchase the partially completed Santa Monica Beach Hotel for $18.75 million from a group of investors led by Los Angeles developer Sam Stein. The Slatkin and Goldman Sachs group said it would complete the 198-room beachfront hotel, which fell into bankruptcy last year, in about eight months.

Overseeing Hotel Sale: Optima Asset Management Services Inc. of Newport Beach has been appointed to take bids for the sale of the Santa Monica Beach Hotel, an unfinished 200-room luxury hotel there that is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy. A committee composed of the hotel's secured creditors selected the property management firm to oversee the sale.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee will move its headquarters for the party's national presidential convention from the nonunion Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel if a dispute over a labor election isn't settled by next week, committee officials said Monday. The committee has begun to consider using a unionized Santa Monica hotel. "If we had to squeeze into smaller spaces at the Fairmont Miramar, we can do that," committee spokesman Erik Smith said of meetings planned for next week.

We went to the opening night of Riva in Loew's Santa Monica Beach Hotel, 1700 Ocean Ave., Santa Monica, (213) 458-6700, with my friend Sam, who used to live in the building that lies between the hotel and the beach. He seemed to find the idea of a luxury hotel here hilariously funny. "Wait until they find out what it's like down here on the Fourth of July," he chuckled. He laughed even harder when he realized that they were calling the seafood appetizer a shore harvest. "Would you want to eat anything harvested from these shores?"

The first major beach front hotel project to be approved by the city of Santa Monica in many decades will break ground in December on 2.6 acres bordered by Ocean Avenue, Arcadia Autoway and Appian Way. The $60-million Santa Monica Beach Hotel, a development of Santa Monica Hotel Associates Ltd., to be operated by the Hyatt Hotels, represents a breakthrough for the hotel industry in that coastline area.
