The chance to build a light rail line on Exposition Boulevard from Santa Monica to downtown Los Angeles is almost too good to be true ("Putting Westside on Rails," editorial, April 28). This project would give the people of the county of Los Angeles a viable alternative to the congestion on the Santa Monica Freeway. This light rail line would serve residents and businesses along a 17-mile route and give us access to the rich economic, recreational and cultural sites in Southern California.
Car-pool lanes on the Santa Monica Freeway--a politically odious notion revived only as an emergency, post-earthquake measure--could someday become permanent. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Federico Pena, Mayor Richard Riordan and other city officials are urging the creation of permanent car-pool lanes on the nation's busiest freeway--an action that would mean depriving solo motorists of one lane in each direction.

For motorists planning to drive eastbound on the Santa Monica Freeway near downtown Los Angeles this weekend or motoring northbound on the Santa Ana/Hollywood Freeway (Route 101) near the Civic Center from Monday to Thursday, the California Department of Transportation has news: Beginning at midnight Sunday until 5 a.m.

A man who told police he is a graffiti artist was accused Monday of vandalizing an L.A. Marathon mural hours before the start of the marathon last weekend. Ricardo Espinoza, 23, was charged with causing between $5,000 and $10,000 in damage and possession of vandalism tools after he was arrested by California Highway Patrol officers, who found him crouching in the bushes near the marathon mural on the Santa Monica Freeway near Overland Avenue, prosecutors said.

Social engagement and economic development have been cornerstones of the African Methodist Episcopal Church since it was founded in the late 1700s by black congregants who refused to move to the back of a white church in Philadelphia to pray. In one of the first civil rights protests in American history, they crossed the street to worship inside a blacksmith shop, where an anvil served as an altar and pulpit. The AME church went on to fight against slavery and prejudice, found colleges and seminaries and support development of community improvement projects across the country.

The first 15 miles or so of Interstate 10, from the ocean to downtown Los Angeles, hardly lives up to the grandly romantic image conjured by the freeway's proper name, the Christopher Columbus Transcontinental Highway. A dreary, gray ribbon of asphalt traversed daily by as many as 250,000 people, the Santa Monica Freeway has if anything taken on an even bleaker look in recent years.
