While the Santa Paula Union High School District recently disciplined a teacher after she showed an R-rated film to her students, a number of other Ventura County districts do not prohibit showing such movies to high school classes, with proper approval. Districts that permit R-rated movies require that the films have some relation to the curriculum and that teachers receive administrative and parental approval to show the films.

The Santa Paula Union High School District laid off four teachers and reduced the hours of another for the 1991-92 school year because of a projected decline in state education funds. The school board formalized the layoffs Wednesday at a special board meeting to give the teachers time to look for other jobs, officials said. The four full-time teachers who were laid off will continue to work at Santa Paula High School until the end of the school year, district officials said.

Freshmen English classes at Santa Paula High School will contain fewer students for the semester beginning in February. The classes will be reduced to a maximum of 20 students per teacher from the present 27-to-1 ratio, said Carolina Erie, Santa Paula Union High School District superintendent. "Because we don't have very large classes to begin with, we don't have the problem some school districts do making the adjustment," Erie said. The reduction will occur at the semester break, Erie said.

Trustees of the Santa Paula Union High School District have selected an assistant principal to lead Santa Paula High School. School board members voted earlier this week to offer the job to Tony Gaitan, who has worked as the school's assistant principal for the past three years. "He's a known entity," school board Vice President Terry Nelson said. "He's been at the high school for quite awhile. He has the experience and he's been able to be a quiet leader on campus as an assistant principal."
