The pregame hoopla and speculation never made it to the field. The intensity, memories and rivalry you might have expected to be involved in Friday afternoon's baseball game between Helix and Santana high schools--a rematch of last season's San Diego Section 3-A title game--were sorely lacking. Instead, it was a more-than-routine, less-than-spectacular nonleague game that Helix won, 5-2.

State Rep. Suzanna Hupp doesn't like to advertise the fact. But if you press her, she won't deny it--yes, she does carry a loaded gun when she's on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives. She feels safer that way. For similar reasons, she wrote a bill--three days before the recent school shooting in Santee, Calif.--to allow rural high school principals to carry concealed weapons on the job.

Ten years ago, we had all grown accustomed to reading about surveillance cameras and metal detectors in dingy inner-city high schools. Now, we read about surveillance cameras and metal detectors at high schools in the suburbs, where kids drive their own cars and wear labeled clothing they see on TV. And we read about armed cops on staff. No one would confuse the little red schoolhouse of legend with modern U.S.
