LANCASTER When Sara Gonzales isn't pitching a softball, she is talking about pitching a softball. Several times a week, the Paraclete High junior works with aspiring pitchers from the Eastside Little League in Lancaster, teaching girls 10-12 years old the nuances of the sport's most demanding position. The youngsters look up to Gonzales, 17, the most successful pitcher in the Antelope Valley this season. "There's always a lot of little girls at our games," Paraclete teammate Heather Brown said.

Paraclete 1, Village Christian 0--Tiffany Forrest's fourth-inning single gave the Spirits their 21st consecutive Alpha League title at Jane Reynolds Park in Lancaster. Forrest's hit scored Jackie Kolesar from third. With one game to play, Paraclete (20-3, 5-1) and Village Christian (19-4, 5-1) likely will finish as co-champions. However, Village Christian would enter the Southern Section Division V playoffs as the league's No. 1 team, based on a a coin flip Tuesday.

Westlake 1-2, Hueneme 1-0--Tiffany Meadows, pitching in her first high school game, threw a no-hitter in the second game of a nonleague doubleheader at Westlake (7-4-2). Meadows, a junior who is a three-year starter in the outfield, struck out four, walked one and hit a batter. Eric Mijares had two hits for Hueneme (9-3-1).

Freshman Oscar Carrenza and junior Cody Afkhami combined to win three events and each swam a leg on winning relays Monday to help Van Nuys High edge cross-town rival Grant, 80-79, in an East Valley League opener at Van Nuys. Carrenza won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:29.01, the 100 butterfly in 1:09.79 and swam the anchor leg on the winning 200 freestyle relay. Afkhami won the 100 backstroke in 1:07.82 and swam lead on the winning 200 medley relay. Van Nuys improved to 2-1. Grant is 1-2.

Lauren Nydam of Village Christian High and Sara Gonzales of Paraclete locked up in one of the region's best pitching duels of the season on Thursday. Nydam, a freshman, struck out a school-record 21 batters and pitched a three-hitter at Village Christian to defeat the Spirits, 1-0, in 18 innings and claim sole possession of first place in the Alpha League. Gonzales (15-2), a junior, struck out a school-record 23 in a five-hitter.

Megan Ivey pitched a one-hitter and Saugus High defeated Irvine University, 3-0, Wednesday in pool play at the Woodbridge tournament Wednesday. Ivey struck out eight and retired 17 of the last 18 hitters. Julie Watson and Ivey each had two hits for Saugus (11-6), ranked No. 9 in the region by The Times. Watson had two more hits as the Centurions lost, 1-0, to El Toro in another game. Alemany 3, Grove City (Ohio) 2--Kaitlin Reiss' two-run double powered the Indians (10-8) at Alemany.

A 22-year cold spell might be nearing an end, thanks to a hot pitcher and a sizzling offense. Paraclete High, a Southern Section softball runner-up six times in 22 seasons under Coach Margaret Neill, earned a seventh chance at a first title on Tuesday, defeating Western Christian, 5-0, in a Division V semifinal in Covina. "It's good to be back," said Neill, who has a 548-98 career record.

California 1, Rio Mesa 0--Chanel Tripp (20-4) threw a four-hitter with 17 strikeouts, but the Condors scored on an error in the bottom of the 10th inning. Division IV Notre Dame 10, Notre Dame Academy 0--Amanda De La Cerda (19-5) pitched a two-hitter with four strikeouts, and Cori Blanton and Jessica Mundy each drove in three runs for host Notre Dame (20-7) at Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Park.
