Teen girls who are close to their mothers are more likely to stay virgins longer, researchers reported. The key for parents, experts say, is not just talking about sex, but being involved in their kids' lives. "The message to parents is: You matter," said Sarah Brown, director of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. By the ninth grade, 34% of teens have had sexual intercourse, and that rises to 60% by 12th grade.

Alfred Damon Runyon was a real hellion when he was growing up in Colorado, a juvenile delinquent of the first order. He never forgot those days when he eventually became a famous New York newspaperman, and later one of the country's top short-story writers. Though his fictional turf was Times Square, many of his characters were based on thugs and gangsters he knew as a kid out West. He had a deep affection for those on the edge of the law, and that fondness shows in his writing.

Frank Loesser's "Guys and Dolls" is still the smashing show it was when it opened on Broadway in 1950. Based on stories by Damon Runyon, it hasn't dated in its almost mythological story of Manhattan low-life hucksters finding redemption. Of course, in Runyon these guys aren't ever as low as the real thing. Call it a gangland fairy tale. Director-choreographer Sha Newman, who staged a sterling "West Side Story" for Fullerton Civic Light Opera last season, is at the helm for this FCLO revival.

Winslow Homer's watercolor "The Woodcutter," Fitz Hugh Lane's "Sunset at Gloucester Harbor" and Georgia O'Keeffe's "Open Clam Shell" and "Closed Clam Shell" cannot be viewed at any museum in New York City or Paris. They're in Texas--where they usually aren't on public display at all. But those and nearly 60 other pieces borrowed from private, public and corporate collections across the state are on display through Nov. 17 at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth.

Women certainly have made their mark in Silicon Valley. Think Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and Yahoo Chief Executive Carol Bartz. But the relative paucity of female technology entrepreneurs remains a chronic problem. So Arianna Huffington, Donna Karan and Sarah Brown are teaming up with i/o Ventures to identify the most promising female technology entrepreneur. The award, which comes with a $25,000 investment from i/o Ventures and several months' free office space at its headquarters in San Francisco, will be presented at the inaugural WIE Symposium in New York City in September.

To director Sheryl Donchey's credit, her treatment of "Guys and Dolls" at Rancho Santiago College leaves this classic in recognizable form. It's not that the Frank Loesser musical is shoddily done by the college's Professional Actors Conservatory. The stage is fixed up in a Cubist style that serves to excite the eye in a confetti swirl of color and silhouetted forms. This effectively captures the vibrancy of a crowded city street scene.

"Guys and Dolls" was one of the hits of Broadway's 1950 season, and the show's highlights were the unforgettable performance of Robert Alda as the tough but charming Sky Masterson, and the kinky vocal calisthenics of Vivian Blaine as Miss Adelaide.
