"Eurydice," Sarah Ruhl's playful retelling of the Orpheus myth from a female perspective, has returned from that underworld where plays go between revivals. It seems as though someone is always summoning this one up, and the current production at South Coast Repertory, while overplaying at times the work's theatrical whimsy, reveals what's so enticing about the playwright's vision. Directed by SCR artistic director Marc Masterson, this "Eurydice" is visually quite alluring. Gerard Howland's lightly surreal scenic design is beautifully lighted by Anne Militello, who finds all sorts of otherworldly hues to suggest Eurydice's descent to the land of the dead on her wedding day. The multimedia design by John Crawford tickles the unconscious with flickering background images that mix the mythic with the postmodern with as much confidence as Ruhl splices together the ancient and the modern.

Right at the start of Sarah Ruhl's "Passion Play," now at the Odyssey Theatre, a religious crisis of the kind Freud would have appreciated erupts. The actress playing Mary in the town's religious pageant secretly has the hots for the young hunk playing Jesus. How can she be expected to act maternal - never mind holy - when he's strutting around so temptingly in a loin cloth that keeps slipping? The frolicsome boldness of Ruhl's imagination is on cheeky display in this Odyssey Theatre Ensemble-Evidence Room co-production directed by Bart DeLorenzo.

What do women want? The question flummoxed Freud, whose erotic theories drew mostly blanks when it came to the opposite sex. Sarah Ruhl, the effervescent playwriting talent who has given fresh meaning to the overused word "quirky," doesn't have many answers herself. But in her latest offering, "In the Next Room (or the vibrator play)," which is having its world premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, she has a little mechanical device to suggest to women still sorting out the conundrums of love, sex and equality.

If you really ponder the fate of Eurydice, swept back into death by her husband Orpheus' eager glance, you'll be struck by the sheer passivity of her situation.  At least Lot's wife looked back of her own accord.  Sarah Ruhl revisits the Orpheus legend from a delicately feminist perspective in her prolifically produced play “Eurydice,” now at A Noise Within, ultimately putting Eurydice's fate firmly back in her own hands. It's a satisfyingly revisionist take. Yet, somewhat unexpectedly, Orpheus and Eurydice's youthful passion is dwarfed by Ruhl's more resonant theme of fatherly love.

Heading east: Berkeley Repertory Theatre's world premiere production of Sarah Ruhl's comedy "In the Next Room (or the vibrator play)," which closed Sunday in Berkeley, is on its way to Broadway. The play will open at New York's Shubert Theatre Nov. 19.

Sarah Ruhl, a Santa Monica playwright who received notice last year for her stage version of Virginia Woolf's "Orlando" at the Actors' Gang, has won the $10,000 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for her unproduced script "The Clean House." The annual prize is for an outstanding new English-language play by a woman. Among the past winners are Caryl Churchill, Marsha Norman, Wendy Wasserstein, Naomi Wallace and Paula Vogel, under whom Ruhl studied while earning a master's at Brown University.

The new 2012-13 season at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa is scheduled to feature recent comedies by Stephen Adly Guirgis and David Henry Hwang, as well as a world-premiere work by playwright Noah Haidle. The season is also to feature plays by Sarah Ruhl, Bill Cain and Samuel D. Hunter. The season is the first to be selected by Marc Masterson , who took over as the company's artistic director in 2011. Guirgis' "The Mother... with the Hat" (Jan. 6 to 27) is tol make its local debut in a production directed by Michael John Garcés.

In a crisp, clean, contemporary house filled with crisp, clean, contemporary furniture, Matilde, a maid, sweeps vigorously. Then she pauses, the light turns dreamy and a Latin beat begins. The rhythm sets Matilde's hips in motion and, abandoning all pretext of work, she gyrates around the room. Amusingly unreliable, Matilde is but one character in South Coast Repertory's presentation of "The Clean House" who is about to realize how messy life can be.
