Defense Firm's Workers to Return: Sargent-Fletcher Co., an El Monte-based producer of fuel tanks and other military aircraft gear, said the 80% of its employees who were temporarily laid off are expected to return to work today. The company, with 350 workers overall, cited "a temporary cash-flow problem" for the layoff that began Sept. 23. But Sargent-Fletcher said it "has no intention of ceasing operations" and that the shutdown "should have no significant impact" on its shipments.

From factories in Palmdale and Sunnyvale to a supplier's plant in El Monte to the Downtown Los Angeles offices of leading charities, Californians were bracing Tuesday for the fallout from Lockheed Corp.'s plans to merge with Martin Marietta Corp., creating the nation's largest defense firm. In formally announcing the $10-billion deal, the chief executives of the two companies predicted that some jobs will be lost as they streamline their operations.

Look at the neighborhood surrounding Sargent-Fletcher and you are looking at the complexities of sorting out the relationship between health risks and pollution. The El Monte chrome-plating plant, which turns out aerospace parts, showed the highest cancer-risk level of any business in the San Gabriel Valley, according to a 1991 report the company submitted to regional air quality officials.
