Poncho Ruiz hit a grand slam and drove in eight runs and Marc Anspach hit a grand slam and drove in seven as Fullerton beat host Saddleback, 30-9, in the Orange Empire Conference baseball opener for both teams Saturday. Fullerton (10-2) had a 14-run second inning that included Ruiz's grand slam and Anspach's three-run double. Fullerton sent 20 batters to the plate in the inning and Saddleback made two errors, which made 13 of the 14 runs unearned.

In another Orange Empire Conference softball game: Fullerton 5, Orange Coast 4--Stephanie Mendoza, Jill Otto and Lupie Janos each had two hits for Fullerton (23-10, 11-5). Jill Otto survived a shaky first inning to retire the final 14 batters she faced, allowing one hit in the final six innings and improving her record to 11-5. Angela Silcox went two for three with one RBI for Orange Coast (10-19, 6-0).

El Modena named Jeff Pearson its girls' soccer coach. Pearson, a former player at Concordia University and Long Beach College, has coached the Mission Viejo girls' team the last three seasons. * Heather Carll of La Mirada has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Concordia, David Carll, her father, said Friday. Carll, a 6-foot-3 center, averaged 16.7 points and 13.8 rebounds last season and was named the player of the year in the Suburban League.

Anthony Carter, the state's leading community college basketball scorer last season for Saddleback College, has committed to play next season at Hawaii. Carter, a 6-1 guard who was a two-time most valuable player in the Orange Empire Conference, is the fifth Saddleback player to sign with the Rainbows in the last four years. He will join Eric Ambrozich and Micah Kroeger on Hawaii's roster next season. Carter averaged 27.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and three steals. He had a season-high 44 points.

It was another lucky seventh for Diamond Bar, the fifth-ranked team in the Southern Section Division I baseball poll. The Brahmas scored three runs after two were out in the top half of the seventh inning, then got Villa Park's Todd Jackson to line into a game-ending double play to secure an 8-4 victory in the championship game of the Santa Ana Easter tournament Wednesday at Rancho Santiago College.

David Matranga stepped to the plate Friday, determined to get himself and the Orange baseball team out of a rut. By the end of the day it was Foothill that was deep in a hole. The Panthers shook themselves out of the doldrums by pasting the Knights, 17-2, in a Century League game at Foothill. It ended a two-game losing streak and swung the team's batting average upward for the first time in weeks. In fact, Orange's 16 hits matched its total from the previous three games.

Adam Gross singled home Jeff Volz from third with no outs in the 11th inning to give El Modena a 5-4 victory over first-place Canyon in a Century League baseball game Monday at El Modena. Gabe Valencia had three hits, including a home run, and Jeremy May pitched three shutout innings, striking out five, to earn the victory for the Vanguards (5-14, 3-6 in league). Royce Valent hit a two-out single in the top of the seventh to drive in the tying run for Canyon (12-7, 6-3).
