As a high school senior, honor student, yearbook editor and member of several academic societies, Saule Sadunas has plenty of responsibilities to keep her busy during her final semester at Mater Dei High School. There are yearbook deadlines to meet, scholarship applications to fill out, counselors to see and a 4.3 grade-point average to maintain. Today, however, her sole focus will be a black and white leather ball.

Saule Sadunas is a serious student. She is just as serious on the soccer field where she plays sweeper for Mater Dei. She has to be. She often is the last line of defense before the goalie. The Monarchs won the Angelus League title, are 22-4-2 and will play host to Canyon in the semifinals of the Southern Section 3-A playoffs at 3 p.m. today.

There was a time when Shawn Viloria couldn't dribble a soccer ball without having a few doubts tag along for the ride. Although she was always among the best players her age, Viloria, a junior at El Toro High School, had little confidence--especially in her shot. All that changed this season. "I've gotten more confident," said Viloria, The Times' player of the year in girls' soccer. "Before, I would always lay it off (pass the ball), now I take people on one-on-one. . . .
