Aircraft designer Burt Rutan rolled out and demonstrated his latest creation Monday--an experimental jet fighter with such potential missions as shooting down enemy helicopters or drug-laden cargo planes. The aircraft was not paid for by the Pentagon and its design was not dictated by the military, explaining why it defies many of the government's most important conventions such as complexity, high cost and big bureaucracy.

Northrop Grumman Corp. bought Burt Rutan's Scaled Composites, builder of the first privately funded rocket ship to reach space. Northrop declined to say how much it paid for closely held Scaled Composites, based in Mojave. The purchase, made this month, requires approval from the Justice Department. Scaled Composites' manned SpaceShipOne reached suborbital space three times in 2004. In the last two years, the company has collaborated with Northrop on unmanned aerial vehicles.

Dick Rutan, who piloted a plane nonstop around the world in 1986, has been sued over his alleged approval of an English-designed plane that allegedly turned out to be unstable and dangerous. Rutan of Mojave is one of four defendants that Aviation Composites Co. Ltd. of Berkshire, England, accused of breach of contract and fraud. The company develops and makes aircraft for sale to amateur pilots.

Acclaimed aircraft designer Burt Rutan said Wednesday that he is sick of "the lousy schools, crime, drugs, graffiti and proliferation of lawyers" in California and has decided to move his small Mojave firm, Scaled Composites Inc., to another state.

They are all made, at least in part, of composites, unusually strong materials that outperform more conventional building materials. The Egyptians found that embedding straw in their bricks imparted extra strength that allowed them to build brick homes that better withstood weather and aging processes.
