Like a lumbering and laborious monster intent on capturing his prey, Six Flags Magic Mountain continues to make slow but steady progress toward improving its annual Fright Fest event. Success has finally caught up with Universal's Horror Nights as the gold standard of Halloween theme park events has grown too predictable, complacent and popular for its own good. After years of defining and redefining the bleeding edge of theme park terror, a combination of overwhelming crowds, shrinking space due to construction and a weak collection of haunted mazes delivered a triple whammy to Halloween Horror Nights this year at Universal Studios Hollywood. Photos: Halloween Horror Nights 2013 at Universal Studios Hollywood Crowds have become an increasing problem as Horror Nights has grown in popularity, but this year was unbearable.

The aging elegance of the Long Beach-moored Queen Mary ocean liner and hotel provides a perfect backdrop for the fog-shrouded nautical nightmare theme that unifies the Dark Harbor haunted event. I caught Dark Harbor over the weekend after a bit of buzz touting the rebooted Halloween event as much improved over languishing past offerings. Dark Harbor will continue from 7 p.m. until midnight Thursday to Sunday (Oct. 21 to 24) and 27 to 31. Dark Harbor compares well to Halloween theme-park events at Knott's Berry Farm and Universal Studios Hollywood , albeit on a smaller scale.

After taking visitors through the zombie-infested streets of Atlanta last year, the all-new Walking Dead maze returns this year with scenes from the show's third season set in an abandoned prison and its rural Georgia surroundings.

As we slip into October, I decided to assemble my first-ever Fantasy Halloween League of the Top 13 haunted mazes at theme parks around the world. Think of the Top 13 list as a nightmare fantastic park with the most demented, disturbing and disgusting collection of haunted attractions ever gathered in one virtual place. Or my definition of a dream vacation if I had a bottomless budget and unlimited vacation time to jet around the world to the best and most bizarre haunts.
