Scarpetta, in Italian, means “little shoe,” or the shape bread takes when used to sop up every last bite. And you're bound to do just that at Scott Conant's Italian eatery, a hit not just in Vegas, but in New York, Miami and Beverly Hills, as well. Both rustic and haute, Scarpetta is rich in modern interpretations of Italian classics. Sample light appetizers like tuna susci with marinated vegetables and preserved truffles, followed by house-made pasta - go for simple spaghetti in tomato sauce with basil, or smoked ricotta casonei with pistachios and poppy seeds - all of it, simply sublime.

Former Patina executive chef Tony Esnault has taken the reins of the kitchen at the downtown restaurant Church & State. Owner Yassmin Sarmadi tapped Esnault to work at Spring, a new French restaurant slated to open on the ground floor of the Douglas Building on Spring Street in late 2013, but Esnault ended up stepping into former Church & State chef Jeremy Berlin's spot. Esnault will still be the chef at Spring when it opens. Esnault's menu additions at Church & State include a chicory and citrus salad, coq au vin and nettle soup.

For a long time, Los Angeles chefs had the city to themselves. Outsiders might have turned up for a guest chef turn or two, but never much more than that. But then a couple of years ago that all changed, and Los Angeles was suddenly as attractive as Las Vegas to restaurateurs with satellite restaurants to shop. Fancy that. And now, following Thomas Keller ( Bouchon ), Tom Colicchio ( Craft ), Laurent Tourondel ( BLT Steak ), and José Andrés ( Bazaar ), to name a few, comes Scott Conant with Scarpetta , the fourth iteration of his high-end Italian restaurant in New York's meatpacking district.

Master sommelier Bobby Stuckey and chef Lachlan MacKinnon-Patterson got to know each other when they were working together at the French Laundry in Napa Valley. Eight years ago they opened Frasca Food and Wine in Boulder, Colo. Their next project? Starting their own wine label based in Italy's Friuli wine region. The first Scarpetta wines were whites. Now they've moved on to reds, specifically Barbera from the Monferrato region in Piedmont. Working with Fabrizio Iuli there, they've come up with this terrific Barbera for less than $20. That's real value these days.

Depending on how one counts, it was a meeting either six months or almost 20 years in the making. The major participants? Two pop-culture luminaries. One was Angelina Jolie, the Oscar winner who launched 1,000 paparazzi and carried off with swagger such action flicks as "Wanted" and "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider." The other was Patricia Cornwell, one of the world's most commercial authors. The topic was Kay Scarpetta, Cornwell's signature character, the medical examiner in 17 mystery novels.

Patricia Cornwell won a judgment of $50.9 million against her former financial managers in federal court in Boston on Tuesday. Cornwell is the author of the bestselling Kay Scarpetta mystery novels. Cornwell accused her former money management firm Anchin, Block & Anchin LLP and its former principal, Evan H. Snapper, for negligence in the handling of her ­finances. According to Cornwell, not only had the firm improperly invested $89 million of her money, it had also made illegal campaign contributions that drew the attention of the FBI, undermined her work and even traumatized her dog . The money management firm was paid about $40,000 per month to handle Cornwell's finances, which included the renovation of her Massachusetts estate and leasing a lavish apartment for her. The managers claimed that it was Cornwell's own extravagance , including leasing expensive private jets, that was to blame.
