Dazed, red-eyed and stuffed with donated chocolate chip cookies, about 30 schoolmates headed back to Mexico on Thursday evening, grateful to be alive after their field trip to Disneyland was shattered by a harrowing crash on Interstate 10. Just before midnight Wednesday, the sixth- and seventh-graders from the border city of Mexicali were headed home on a school bus with 10 teachers and parents.

A car collided with a school bus carrying 10 children and both vehicles plunged into a drainage ditch Friday, seriously injuring a passenger in the automobile and causing minor injuries to the children, who were wearing seat belts, officials said. The car, driven by Osvaldo Barron, 19, was darting in and out of traffic on Interstate 10 when it struck the small bus at 2:10 p.m., California Highway Patrol spokesman John Savage said. The bus and car tumbled 60 feet into the ditch.

A passenger vehicle struck a school bus Tuesday at a desert intersection, and 19 children aboard the bus suffered minor injuries, authorities said. Sandy Hannon of the California Highway Patrol's high desert office here said the crash occurred when the school bus turned in front of the other vehicle. The 8:15 a.m. accident occurred at a dangerous intersection, where flashing lights were recently added to alert motorists to the four-way stop, Hannon said.
