On the first day of the semester, Sylmar High math teacher Cesar Fuentes wasted no time: " Ven, tomen una computadora ," he said. "Go grab a laptop. " In minutes, the students flipped open the Apple computers, the lights went down and, like a digital textbook, the geometry curriculum popped onto the white board — every word written in Spanish. At Sylmar and three other high schools in Southern California, instructors are running some of the state's only rigorous bilingual math and science classes using online curriculum from Mexico.

It's the time of year in high school basketball when players are banged up but still find a way to play, and that's what is happening with standout point guard Michael Caffey of Corona Centennial. He injured his ankle Tuesday night during the Southern California Division I regionals. His coach, Josh Giles, didn't expect him to play Thursday, but Caffey did his best, and now he'll try to keep playing on Saturday in a semifinal showdown with Woodland Hills Taft at 5 p.m. at Corona Roosevelt.

I admit it. I would have taken the menu if I could have gotten away with it. When trying to store up information about the smells, flavors and ambience of a particular restaurant, it has always seemed rude to sit there taking notes. And since restaurant reviewing is best done anonymously, taking notes tends to arouse suspicion. So I usually ask for a copy of the menu as I leave and, when I get outside to the car, I make notes, which is easier to do if you can refer to the menu.

Sarah Smallwood of Tustin is perplexed by her best-dressed title. "I think dressing nice--not grungy--is important," the 18-year-old says. "I guess I get compliments on my clothes. I certainly don't make fashion a priority in my life." But even on a day that she's wearing an outfit she considers "no big deal," Sarah looks put-together in a cropped denim vest and flirty black and white dress. "I like dresses. I think they're comfortable, and I like to feel feminine." She loves sun dresses, though lately she's favored short "Brady Bunch" dresses with colored tights.
