Ken Davis, Schurr high school football coach, has resigned, citing frustration with the Montebello Unified School District's recent $9-million budget cuts on athletics. The Montebello school must raise $100,000 to retain sports. Bus transportation and the summer football conditioning program were eliminated. "I'm not tired of coaching," said Davis, 57, who will remain as athletic director. "I just decided I didn't want to put up with these things anymore."

On a blazing hot afternoon in June, 1990, Harry Christ Manos, a respected science teacher, was driving to a physics conference in Minneapolis when he spotted a hitchhiker standing under a freeway bridge just outside Las Vegas. The blond-haired boy, who had just turned 17, accepted a ride and, in the weeks that followed, accompanied Manos on a cross-country road trip before moving into the high school teacher's home in Alhambra.

In Division II: El Dorado is eliminated--Pico Rivera El Rancho defeated El Dorado, 34-26, in the semifinals at Montebello Schurr High School. The unseeded Golden Hawks, champions of the Empire League, defeated Temecula Valley, 40-18, in the first round, then upset second-seeded Montebello Schurr, 31-22, in the quarterfinals.

Parents of Schurr High School honors students are concerned about cutbacks in funding for honors classes, advanced-placement classes, gifted cluster classes and, especially, the former full-time college-university counselor position. If the Montebello Unified School District Board of Education fails to restore funding to those four areas, it will deny and deprive Schurr students an opportunity for outstanding academic achievement, and will deny them entry into colleges and universities because they will not be able to compete successfully against other California students.

The third annual National Invitational Mexican-American basketball tournament, sponsored by the Nostros Athletic Assn., will be held this weekend at Schurr High School in Montebello. The tournament, matching teams from seven cities in the Southwest United States and one from Mexico, will consist of four games Friday evening, starting at 6; eight Saturday, starting at 10 a.m., and the semifinal and championship games Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. Admission is free.

Officials of the federal Environmental Protection Agency will discuss their plans for cleaning up the Operating Industries Inc. landfill in Monterey Park at a meeting with residents at 7 tonight at Schurr High School in Montebello. The landfill was recently placed on the federal Superfund cleanup list.

Students at Schurr High School in Montebello get into the holiday spirit of giving by collecting canned foods for distribution to needy families in the Montebello Unified School District. The annual project is sponsored by Interact, a campus service club, and supported by faculty and school staff members, at right, who helped with sorting and distribution plans. The food was supplemented by 300 turkey gift certificates donated by Gibraltar Savings in Montebello.
