Each has been assisted by a man who earlier this decade orchestrated one of the darkest scams committed in sports history: Victor Conte. Conte, founder and head of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO), distributed then-undetectable steroids to some of the world's most talented athletes, including Olympic star Marion Jones, the personal trainer of baseball's all-time home run king Barry Bonds, boxer Shane Mosley, baseball sluggers Jason Giambi and Gary Sheffield and some NFL players.

Some of the most recognizable faces in the world of sports will file through a U.S. district courthouse here in coming weeks, subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury. Barry Bonds, among the greatest home-run hitters in baseball, is scheduled to appear. So are Jason Giambi of the New York Yankees and sprinter Kelli White, who won two gold medals at the recent world track championships.
