Petros Papadakis, a widely recruited running back from Palos Verdes, has left California and may join his brother at USC. If Papadakis chooses to transfer to USC, Pacific 10 rules will require him to sit out two years because he participated in practices at Cal. However, Pac-10 rules also provide a petitioning procedure whereby an athlete can ask that the two-year term be reduced to one, if he is released from his letter of intent.

Capistrano Valley turned two blocked punts into all the points it needed to shut out Dana Hills, 16-0, Friday in the South Coast League opener for both teams. Dana Hills (3-1-2, 0-1) entered the game undefeated behind its vaunted defense. But it was Capistrano Valley's defense that sparkled Friday night. As both offenses struggled to move the ball, the Cougars' special teams took charge.

Led by Jeff Culver and Andrew Klein, the Cougar defense recorded 11 sacks and held the Dolphins (1-7, 0-3) to minus nine yards rushing. Rob Crummel of Dana Hills floated a wobbly 30-yard field-goal attempt wide to the left with 23 seconds remaining. The ugly was a fitting conclusion. Dana Hills and host El Toro piled up penalties and turnovers during their 7-7 tie in a South Coast League game Friday night at Trabuco Hills High School. A tie was nothing new to Dana Hills, which has three of them this season. Even so, it was probably enough to get the Dolphins (5-1-3, 2-1-1) into the playoffs.
