Moorpark High has hired former Musketeer assistant Scott Fullerton as its baseball coach. Fullerton will replace David Rhoades, who accepted an assistant coaching position at Pepperdine in August. Moorpark Athletic Director Rich Uphoff said Fullerton is just what he was looking for--a coach cut from the same cloth as Rhoades. "He's very similar to David Rhoades in that he preaches discipline, conditioning and fundamentals," Uphoff said. "He's detail oriented, very methodical."

Fifty-two of Ventura County's top senior baseball players will converge on Oxnard College today for the East-West All-Star game, making winning a vastly secondary consideration for coaches. Getting everybody playing time is the No. 1 challenge. "It's a good thing it's a nine-inning game or it would be a nightmare," said Coach Scott Fullerton of Moorpark High, who along with Tony Walzcuk of Malibu is coaching the East team.

Only weeks after a pinched nerve in his lower back threatened to ruin his senior season before it began, Calabasas left-hander Jared Sandler picked up the victory as the Coyotes trounced Moorpark, 12-2, Friday in the Frontier League opener for both teams. Sandler (1-0), who attended Montclair Prep for three years and was 12-2 for the Mounties last season, transferred to Calabasas this year because his parents moved.

Gorbachev's article "America--Casting Light and Shadows" (Nov. 30) tells reality like it is. He points out America's problems, which probably upsets many, but he did so very diplomatically. Gorbachev also admits the problems of his country as well, but of which he is trying to resolve. What America must do now is wise up and look at the world more realistically. The world is growing smaller and we can no longer bury our heads in the sand to avoid the truth that many Americans are starving and suffering as well as others around the world because of our ignorance and greed.

And a Shepard shall lead them . . . Westlake High is something of a wolf in sheep's clothing, a team without a huge star that nevertheless tears apart opponents limb from limb. Players up and down the lineup have contributed to the Warriors' 12-0 start and No. 11 national ranking, but nobody has been more instrumental than leadoff hitter Jon Shepard. A senior center fielder, Shepard is batting .595 and has scored 26 runs while driving in 14, meaning he produces 3.3 runs a game.

During the past three seasons, the Calabasas High baseball team owned the Frontier League. These days, the Coyotes will settle for squatter's rights. Calabasas, whose days as league bully have clearly ended, was routed, 9-1, on Monday by Moorpark, the current league leader and the Coyotes' heir apparent.

Fresh off seven innings as Calabasas High's catcher in Monday's victory over Santa Paula, Brandon Cohen pitched the Coyotes to a 9-4 Frontier League victory over Moorpark on Tuesday. Calabasas (10-0, 6-0), ranked No. 4 by The Times, used Cohen's arm and slipshod fielding by Moorpark to record its fourth victory in five days. Cohen (4-0) went the distance, striking out seven, walking none and allowing three earned runs on six hits.
