One reason Scott Lockwood turned down a scholarship offer from Colorado after an all-star career at Fairview High School in Boulder, Colo., was that the Buffaloes wanted him to play fullback. A tailback at Fairview, he didn't want to become primarily a blocker in college. So what's Lockwood doing in his junior season at USC?

When was the last time USC had a 200-yard rusher and a 100-yard rusher in the same game, as it did Saturday night against Washington State, when tailback Mazio Royster ran for 203 yards in 34 carries and fullback Scott Lockwood ran for 102 yards in 20 carries? It hasn't happened since 1929, when Russ Saunders ran for 234 yards, Jess Hill ran for 166 and USC piled up 753 yards on the ground in the first USC-UCLA game. USC won, 76-0. Its rushing yardage is still a conference record.

If someone had suggested at the start of the season that USC would have a 9-0 record in November and a No. 2 national ranking without a dominating-type tailback, he would have been flaunting tradition. More to the point, the suggestion wouldn't have been credible. The only difference now is that USC's offense is productive with tailbacks , not an individual such as Mike Garrett, O. J. Simpson, Ricky Bell, Anthony Davis, Charles White or Marcus Allen.

Scott Lockwood didn't know it at the time, but his life changed dramatically when Steven Webster went out with a knee injury on the last play of the first quarter of the UCLA game on Nov. 21. As it turned out, Webster was lost for the rest of the season. He underwent extensive surgery after the game to repair ligament damage in his left knee and will be a spectator when USC plays Michigan State in the Rose Bowl game New Year's Day.

USC is back on national television for the second time in two weeks and, perhaps, the Trojans will have their act together this time. They certainly weren't impressive in losing to Michigan State, 27-13, Sept. 7 in a game in which USC self-destructed with fumbles, interceptions and dropped passes. It's the home opener at the Coliseum for USC, and today's opponent, Boston College, is on a roll.

Jimmy Mitchell's infield single drove in Bryant Long in the top of the eighth inning Wednesday to lift Cal State Northridge to a 3-2 victory over Chapman in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game played at Hart Park at Orange. Tom Harmon pitched a complete-game, five-hitter for the Matadors to improve his record to 4-1. Rob Glisson, who pitched the final four innings for the Panthers, took the loss and is 4-4.

With injuries knocking sophomore tight end Yonnie Jackson and senior nose guard Gene Fruge out of Saturday's game against California at the Coliseum, USC could start as many as eight freshmen against the Golden Bears. Coach Larry Smith won't announce his starting lineup until Friday, but six freshmen started in Saturday's 13-6 victory over Arizona State. And the probable replacements for Jackson and Fruge--Brad Banta or Elic Mahone at tight end and Mike Hinz at nose guard--are freshmen.

Will Furrer of Virginia Tech threw a 44-yard touchdown pass just before halftime and directed a late scoring drive Wednesday as the Gray beat the Blue, 20-12, in the 54th Blue-Gray game. The Gray scored with less than two minutes to go in the first half on Furrer's pass to John Brown III of Houston, and scored again on its first possession of the second half after a 43-yard kickoff return by Vanderbilt's Corey Harris.
