Here's a 17-year-old football player from El Toro High School who is 6-feet, 5-inches and 250 pounds and wants to get bigger . So, he eats virtually every hour he's awake, hoping to take in more calories than he burns off. No celery sticks and skim milk for this guy.

Frequently, the only time an offensive lineman is noticed during a game is when he is cited for holding. As a group, they can be virtually anonymous, but their success or failure is a barometer of a team's performance. Last year, UCLA had a generally inexperienced offensive line that appeared to mature as the season progressed. Left guard Scott Spalding, the only senior on the starting unit, said the Bruin line is now deep and talented, without any reference to himself.

As a teammate of Bret Johnson's at both El Toro High School and UCLA, I feel that a few facts Mike Penner failed to mention (Sept. 18) about the Bret Johnson-Todd Marinovich rivalry should be known. 1) In high school, Bret's teams won three league titles and two CIF championships, while Marinovich (Capistrano Valley teams) failed to win one of either. 2) As a college freshman, Bret earned his starting position, while Marinovich started only because of an injury to Pat O'Hara.
