USC linebacker Dion Bailey is recovering from shoulder surgery and will sit out spring practice, new defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast said Thursday. Bailey, a two-year starter who had a team-best four interceptions last season, said in December that he hoped to return to safety next season. Pendergast, hired last month to replace Monte Kiffin as the top defensive assistant, said the Trojans would run a “52” defense. The scheme includes elements of a 4-3 and a 3-4, but could allow linemen such as Morgan Breslin and Devon Kennard to also play as linebackers.

Fallout from USC's disappointing season under Coach Lane Kiffin continued Friday with reports that running backs coach Kennedy Polamalu is no longer part of the Trojans staff. Polamalu, a former USC fullback, coached running backs and held the title of offensive coordinator for the last three seasons. The embattled Kiffin, however, was the play-caller and ran the offense for a team that opened the season No. 1 but finished 7-6, despite having senior quarterback Matt Barkley, All-American receivers Robert Woods and Marqise Lee and running backs Silas Redd and Curtis McNeal, both of whom rushed for more than 1,000 yards the previous season.

Pendergast's hiring could be formalized in the next few days after the school completes a background check, said the individual, who requested anonymity because the hiring is not yet official. Pendergast, California's defensive coordinator the last three seasons, would succeed Monte Kiffin as the Trojans' top defensive assistant.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy missed the cut at the Abu Dhabi Championship in the United Arab Emirates on Friday, a woeful start to the season for the world's top two golfers. Woods missed it after he was penalized two shots for wrongly taking a free drop, while top-ranked McIlroy was frustrated trying to adjust to his new Nike clubs, even though he used his old Titleist putter in the second round. Both finished with three-over 75s. "When you don't hit fairways on this golf course, you can't score," McIlroy said.

Changes in USC's defensive staff continued Thursday as Coach Lane Kiffin announced that secondary coach Marvin Sanders was no longer with the Trojans. Sanders, who coached only one season at USC, was fired in the wake of the arrival of new defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, who will apparently coach the secondary. "We wish Marvin Sanders and his family the best of luck," Kiffin said in a statement. "Marvin did a great job for us coaching our secondary and in recruiting. But with the hiring of Clancy Pendergast as our defensive coordinator, we decided to go in a different direction based on Clancy's desire to oversee the defensive backs unit.

USC opens spring practice Tuesday. The Trojans will work out 15 times, concluding with a scrimmage at the Coliseum on April 14. All practices except the April 14 scrimmage are closed to the public. Here are five questions facing the Trojans: Is there anything left for Matt Barkley to work on? The senior said he would spend his fourth spring practice refining his footwork and throwing mechanics and becoming "a coach on the field. " That's fine with Coach Lane Kiffin.

Numerous USC linebackers coaches helped Hayes Pullard on his way to becoming a projected four-year starter for the Trojans. Joe Barry coached him as a freshman, Scottie Hazelton as a sophomore and Mike Ekeler as a junior. Now, Peter Sirmon is preparing the fifth-year senior for his final season. As the Trojans completed their third week of spring workouts on Saturday, Pullard said he was looking forward to a few more practices before next week's finale at the Coliseum.

Fallout from USC's collapse this season began Thursday, as Monte Kiffin, the assistant head coach for defense, resigned effective after the Trojans' bowl game, the school announced. Kiffin, the 72-year-old father of Coach Lane Kiffin, stepped down to "pursue opportunities in the NFL," the announcement said. But Monte Kiffin was under fire for the defense's poor performance during a 7-5 season. "I respect my father's decision and his desire to return to the NFL," Lane Kiffin said in a statement.
