After a whirlwind courtship, Scripps Memorial Hospitals and Scripps Clinic & Research Foundation have agreed to unify next Jan. 1, leaving Sharp HealthCare as the jilted party in a health-care triangle. The surprise union announced Friday would create the largest health-care concern in San Diego County, an $820-million-a-year conglomerate that would be the county's No. 2 non-governmental employer.

Scripps Memorial Hospital should have done more to protect seriously ill patients from exposure to a potentially lethal fungus that thrived during remodeling and was also probably blown in from the helicopter landing site, a state report says. A cluster of patients at the La Jolla hospital tested positive for the common fungus, aspergillus, from Oct. 28 to Jan. 28, a time during which the hospital was remodeling.

A prominent La Jolla physician who, until he resigned in December, headed a nationally recognized drug-treatment program at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, was named a defendant in a malpractice complaint filed Tuesday in Superior Court. The suit charges Dr. Ronald Mineo, former director of clinical services for the McDonald Center for Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Treatment, with entering into a sexual relationship with a female patient and with increasing her chemical dependency.

Just two years after beginning the largest fund-raising effort ever launched by a community hospital in the United States, Scripps Memorial Hospitals are halfway to the $100-million goal. The achievement puts the nonprofit hospital at the head of a pack of San Diego medical institutions that will be asking wealthy donors over the next several years to foot the bill for new facilities that hospital revenues can no longer underwrite.
