Luis Venegas had a game-high 33 for University. Newport Harbor 60, Saddleback 56 (2 OT)--Mike Klytta made three free throws in the final minute of the second overtime for visiting Newport Harbor (12-11, 4-4). Not long ago, referring to Irvine as a dark horse in the Southern Section playoffs was as unimaginable as the Sea View League's representatives posting a 1-3 record after the first round of Division VI play this season. The Vaqueros won four section titles in five championship-game appearances from 1991-2000. And if Irvine didn't win the title during that time, another league member did.

Laguna Hills moved past Aliso Niguel into second place in the Sea View League baseball race with a 5-4 victory Friday over the host Wolverines. Chris Johnson's bases-loaded walk pushed across the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, capping the comeback for the Hawks, who had trailed, 3-0 and 4-2. Brian Anderson hit two two-run home runs and sophomore left-hander Kevin Barnum gave up two earned runs and six hits in six innings to get the win.

Erik Oijala of Woodbridge bounced back from a first-set loss to Irvine's Eric Aarnaes and won the Sea View League boys' tennis singles title Thursday at the Racquet Club of Irvine. The scores were 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Brett Van Linge and Dijan Noroozi of Woodbridge took the doubles title, defeating Chris Young and Trevor Cunningham of Aliso Niguel, 6-4, 7-5. In the Olympic League: Warriors win--Brethren Christian's John Bowman defeated teammate Mike Mirliss, 6-0, 6-1, to win the singles title.

Matt Schrieber of Aliso Niguel shot a final-round five-under-par 67 Tuesday at Talega, overcoming a four-shot deficit to win the Sea View League individual title by one stroke over teammate Joseph Kim. Schrieber, who shot 72 in the opening round, had seven birdies and an eagle in his two-round total of 139. Kim, who shot 68-72, had nine birdies and an eagle in the two rounds. John Clarke of Woodbridge shot 147 to finish third.

Estancia's Jordan Hart pitched a complete game for the fourth time this season, defeating ninth-ranked Corona del Mar, 5-2, in a Sea View League baseball game Tuesday at Estancia. Hart (3-3) also singled in a run in the fifth, and Justin Lund had two hits and two RBIs for the Eagles (6-13, 3-7). Corona del Mar dropped to 14-7, 9-1. In another Sea View League game: University 18, Laguna Beach 14--Kevin Conlin slugged two home runs and had five RBIs for University, which had five team home runs.

Aliso Niguel Coach: Joe Miller 2000 record: 21-8-1 League record: 7-1 Aliso Niguel and Laguna Hills joined the Sea View League last season, and the Wolverines ended Woodbridge's string of 16 consecutive league titles.
