As a high school sophomore, Sean Evans used to stare at the school record board and think: "OK, what do I have to do to get there?" The mission, in Evans' mind, was to break the most famous school record at San Diego's Patrick Henry High: Thom Hunt's 8-minute 42.5-second mark in the two-mile, still the seventh-fastest high school two miles in U.S. history. Nearly 15 years later, Evans, a former track and cross-country standout at UC Irvine, is asking himself the same question.

Jennifer Abraham of UC Irvine set a school record with a winning time of 4:27.92 in the 1,500 meters Saturday and she also won the 800, but it wasn't enough to stop San Diego State from defeating the Anteaters, 93-58, in a nonconference women's dual meet at San Diego. Latanya Sheffield led San Diego State by winning the 400-meter hurdles in 53.09, the second fastest time for a woman in NCAA history. In a men's tri-meet, SDSU outscored Irvine and Cal Poly Pomona.

Jim Temples says the weather was just better than a hurricane on that Saturday in February 1968. But 18 runners showed up and ran in the first San Dieguito Half Marathon. They probably regretted every minute of it. "It was like running with someone throwing sand in your face," Temples said. "It was like having a storm blow right into your right ear for the first part of the race. We all had terrible earaches by five miles." A few of those runners should be back Sunday at 8 a.m.
