Valley College quarterback Sean Fitzgerald, the Western State Conference South Division offensive player of the year, signed a letter of intent with Pittsburgh on Wednesday and will begin classes at the Big East Conference school Jan. 5. Fitzgerald, a 1991 graduate of Agoura High, chose Pitt over Mississippi and Nevada Las Vegas. "I signed with (Pitt) mostly because of their coaching staff," Fitzgerald said. "They have coaches who I feel comfortable with and who I feel can help me the most."

For many athletes, competing at a junior college instead of a Division I school with a long and glorious sports tradition is a far cry from what they envisioned during their high school days. As their athletic achievements start to turn heads, most young athletes already are dreaming of playing for a leading national program in packed stadiums and arenas. Duke, Florida State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, UCLA, USC. Any of those, and many others, would do.

Quarterback Sheldon Anderson scrambled 70 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 1 minute 30 seconds to play Saturday as Southwest College nudged Valley, 38-35, in a Western State Conference Southern Division game at Southwest. Anderson's run helped the Cougars overcome five touchdown passes by Monarch quarterback Sean Fitzgerald, who completed 25 of 43 passes for 316 yards.

It hasn't taken long for Valley quarterback Sean Fitzgerald to receive rave reviews after leading the Monarchs to victories in their first two games. "I think he should have been a Division I quarterback at a better school than Idaho State right out of high school," Glendale College Coach John Cicuto said after watching Fitzgerald pass for 244 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-16 victory over the Vaqueros on Thursday night.

Agoura 28, Calabasas 7--Quarterback Sean Fitzgerald completed seven of 12 for 134 yards and three touchdowns to lead unbeaten Agoura (3-0). Fitzgerald threw touchdown passes of 40 and 10 yards to Josh Gelfand and also hit Matt Francisco with a 14-yard scoring strike. Damon Riggins of Calabasas (1-2) rushed for 139 yards in 29 carries, including 107 yards in 17 attempts in the second half, and scored the Coyotes' only touchdown on a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Toy maker Mattel Inc. plans to lay off about 400 of its 500 workers in the Portland, Ore., area. The El Segundo-based firm said all 115 workers at its Portland distribution center will lose their jobs, as will 285 workers at the company's Beaverton, Ore., factory, where View-Master reels and viewers have been made since 1950. Mattel spokesman Sean Fitzgerald said about 100 remaining employees will be shifted to a new manufacturing and marketing center in the Beaverton area.

Channel Islands 13, Agoura 10--An inspired Channel Islands defense stopped Agoura running back Kurt Klotz on the one-foot line with one minute to play, preserving a victory at Agoura. With five minutes to play, Agoura drove from its 31 to the Channel Islands' five and seemed ready to seize the lead. But three consecutive running plays only moved the ball to the one, setting up the final attempt. Lamont Pearson dashed 79 yards for the Raiders' go-ahead touchdown late in the third quarter.
